Additional Comments

I forgot to mention how beautiful the weather was while we were there. We couldn't have asked for it to be any nicer. It did rain on our last evening before dinner, but it only lasted a short time.
I think that mom and I might need a relaxing vacation after this one!

Did I mention that the photo at the top of the blog of the beach and ocean is one of my own photos that I took in the Riviera Maya?

Our Final Day

I didn't get much sleep because at 1:30 a.m. I noticed that Sam wet the bed. So, I had to make him get up and changed, and put some towels down so we could get back to bed. I kept looking at the clock to see what time it was.

Breakfast
We ate our farewell breakfast at the buffet.

Final Check of Our Room
We went back to the room and got the last of our stuff together. Mom's bag is ridiculous and kept falling over. We called the Bell Boy to come, and we gave him the broken suitcase.

Best Day Transfers
I noticed at about 10 minutes to 10:00 a.m. that my transfer document still said the RIU Playacar, so I called our Rep, but they said they would give hime the message. When 10:00 a.m. rolled around, I got nervous and  called again because our pick-up was supposed to be earlier, but I pushed it back since we were First Class. Just as I was calling the RIU Playacar back (and speaking to a very rude person at Reception) they showed up. Best Day was great with their transfer service. The drivers were not like Speedy Gonzalez!

Airport Check-In
Check-In was a breeze and we got a wheel chair again for mom. The guy took us through Security (where we were delayed momentarily while they searched Sydney's bag because she brought scissors with her). I can't believe that they didn't catch them at O'Hare. When we got to our seats, I realized that amongst the confusion that I left my laptop backpack on the conveyor belt and had to run back to retrieve it.

Boarding
We all got our bags checked before boarding the plan except for Sam. I think it's because he's Mexican.

The Airplane
Sam and Sydney each had their own window seat this time. Sam was so tired, but he wouldn't fall asleep.

Mas Wheel Chairs
There were 6 people waiting for wheel chairs from our airplane. They weren't there yet, so we had to wait a few minutes. Then, the guy was going to push 2. I don't see how you can push two wheel chairs. Luckily, another guy came. We were at the farthest terminal, so we had to walk very far. Mom wouldn't have made it, but surprisingly, the kids did.

We breezed through Customs because mom was in the wheel chair. Our luggage was also some of the first to come offf the plane. We grabbed it and we were on our way.

Pick-Up
Patty and John were waiting for us inside when we walked out the doorway. John noticed Sydney and started waving.

The kids were really wound up on the way home after seeing their parents.

Sydney
I doubt that Sydney will still want to continue with her plan of staying with us a lot this summer after this trip. She doesn't like to have to keep track of her stuff like I expected her to do.

Next Vacation
It won't be anytime soon as that was exchausting. We told Sydney and Sam that they have to save up their own money for the next one. They would love it if their parents would go.

Day 5

Everyone slept in a little later this morning.

Mom went and put towels on the chairs so that we'd have good seats for our final pool day.

Breakfast
We went to breakfast at the buffet. Sydney has been eating a lot of Mexican food. She even has Quesadillas for breakfast.

Everyone think sthat Sam is Mexican and he doesn't even eat Mexican food! LOL All of the waiters love him.

Pool
They kids were excited to go to the pool, but Syd got so red again. I told her that she had to wear a t-shirt, but of course, she had to argue with me first. I already listened to a day of her complaining about how sore she was from the sunburn and mosquioto bites. Does she think we never had mosquito bites when we were growing up?

Aaron
Aaron is a little boy that introduced himself to me at the pool while I was reading my book. He's 4 years old and from England. Sam played with him for a while (they were playing Pirates). Sydney couldn't understand him too well, so she didn't want to play.

Water Aerobics
Mom did the water aerobics and Sydney stood there.

Lunch
We ate lunch at the poolside restaurant.

More Pool Time
Syd and Sam wanted to go in the pool a while longer. I was already bright red, so I walked to the plaza.

Time To Get Organized
When I returned, I started \packing everyone. Mom has stuff in everyone's suitcases. I don't know what she brings. I try to help her with the clothes, but she must have packed enough bras and underwear for a year. That weighs a lot! I have no idea what is even in her carry-on. It's a bunch of junk she doesn't even need and she could have put her shoes in there.

I can't believe that Syd and Sam actually asked to take showers. Now, that's an improvement.

After everyone was organized, we had some R&R. Even the kids were ready for it. It was a long day at the pool.

Anne Marie
Anne Marie called to see if I wanted to go to Playa for dinner. I left the kids with mom because they had a Mexican Fiesta going on. We drove past the Joyeria where I found the inexpensive jewelry, but it was closed. Then, we went to Jorge's store and we all went to Starbucks. Jorge had to get back to work, so Anne Marie and I went to an Italian restaurant for dinner. I had Gnocchi. Anne Marie drove me back to the resort. It was nice catching up with them. I think I might even see them more often than my friends back home.

Mayan Show
When I got back, the Mayan show was just beginning. Mom was bored to tears, but Sam was enjoying it.

Day 4

Stomach Illness
Today started off badly because I woke up with bad cramps. Not sure what caused it, but it's the first time I ever had a problem. I tend to think it was something that I touched or something because no one else had it except me. Thank God! At least I could suck it up.

I took a Levaquin and Pepto Bismol. I could hardly eat breakfast...just had some fiber cereal.

Luggage
Mom discovered that her luggage was broken and there's no way that she could zip it. Luckily, we have insurance, but we had to go to Playa Del Carmen to buy her a new one.

When we arrived, there was about a 2 minute shower. Sam and Sydney did some more souvenir shopping. Sydney bought a fan to fan herself and Sam bought a shark tooth necklace. He was searching for more skeletons.

Sydney and mom had some gelato too!

Mi Amigo, Paolo
We stopped at the Hotel Jungla Caribe and I inroduced the kids to my friend, Paolo who runs the place. I didn't tell him that I was coming this time either. They have awesome rates considering that they are on 5th Avenue and about 2 blocks to the beach.....just $49.00/night.

Taxi
We were headed back to our hotel, but then I decided to stay in town a while, so the taxi driver dropped me off on Calle 4 and 10th Ave. in the local area where I stayed previously. I walked around a little bit, but my stomach still wasn't doing well. I stopped at every bathroom along the way.

I noticed that Carmelo's restaurant is for sale and the area looked a little worse. I walked to Wal-Mart to see if there luggage prices were any better, but they weren't. I was going to walk all the way back, but then decided there was no point since I didn't feel well.

RIU Tequila
Mom and the kids were at the pool. They swam a little while longer and then we headed to the RIU Yucatan for lunch.

RIU Yucatan
The beach shuttle stops running from 1:00-3:00, so we walked. I thought that mom was going to croak even though it's practically across the street.

We had lunch at the restaurant on the beach called the "Beach Club." It had a great view of the beach and ocean. Sam liked feeding the birds. Sydney couldn't find anything that she liked to eat, s she went to another place.

The kids and I walked the beach a little bit. People were standing in 3 feet of water feeding the fish. That's prime target for shark attacks!

The kids liked the swim-up bar at the Yucatan because it had tables and chairs in it.

They wouldn't give us towels 'cuz we are staying at the Tequila. That is so ridiculous since the Playcar will give them to us. And, mom and I didn't have a problem last time either. They said it's a new policy, and I said that they need to inform people of that upon check-in!

We took a taxi back to the Tequila. LOL

R&R
There's no point in trying to rest because Sydney wouldn't allow it. Although she was over-tired, she had to keep us from resting before dinner. Then, she complains that she's so "tired."

Steak House
We had dinner at the steak house, which was very good. Mom and I ate there last time we stayed at the Tequila. Sam had about 4 pieces of bread. He even tried Cream of Asparagus and Tomato soup, and liked it. I told him that it was like Sophie's. He didn't like the steak, however.

Entertainment
The kids were anxious to get to the show to get front row seats again. Luckily, we were able to. First they had a kid's show and and Ice Breaker before the presentation of "Mama Mia." I have to say that the entertainment staff at this resort is really good.

Day 3

We all loved waking up in our comfy beds with our comfy pillows. I woke up in the middle of the night, and Sam had an extra set of eyes above his eyebrows that were open and staring at me. (He took the eye stickers off the towel art and wore them on his forehead. He wanted to wear them to Xcaret.)

We ate breakfast and then to a taxi to Xcaret.

Xcaret
We rented mom a wheel chair. It was so hard to push around.

Swim With the Dolphins
First we went to the beach area, which was all the way across the park so that Sydney could swim with the dolphins. She loved it, but the program in Puerto Aventuras is much nicer. They had her in an area where we couldn't take any pictures. The photo packages were outrageous! She bought one photo of the Dolphin kissing her.

While we were waiting, Sam dropped his camera down into the unrestricted area, and one of the trainers had to retrieve it.

Although we couldn't see Sydney swimming with the Dolphins, we still had quite a show. The male Dolphins were quite active and chasing the female all over. I never expected that type of show!!!

Ec0-Friendly?
The park is supposed to be eco-friendly and we had to buy special suntan lotion (which they never checked) yet they allow people to smoke there! I think that's a huge contradiction.

Boat Ride
Mom wanted to go on the boat ride, so we searched all over till we found it. We left her wheel chair, and began to follow the path. We didn't know that the path would leave us on a long, and difficult journey. It was about a 20-25 minute walk up and down and all around. Finally, we took the ride down the river. The water was so clear, it was amazing. When we returned, we had a long walk again, but not quite as long. However, we came out at a different area, and had to find the wheel chair We saw a worker with it and got it back.

Lunch
Mom didn't want the Mexican buffet, but it was the closest one. To go to another one would take 10 minutes walking (each way). They really need to have shuttles throughout the property. It's just way too huge! As Cathy Steinorth told me, the buffet was amazing. They did not miss a thing. I think I liked it more than everyone else because I love authentic Mexican food. Sam eats a lot of bread, and Sydney has been eating a few too many beans! Sam tried Mango flavored water and really liked it.

Horses
They had a lof of \horses (and other animals) that we looked at in Xcaret. I think the kids enjoyed the horses and the baby ducks hatching the most. It was very sad to see some of the ducklings trying to break out of their eggs. They would be so exhausted, they couldn't finish.

Back to the Resort
I think we left the park a little after 2:00 p.m. The kids wanted to swim some more. Sam is so freaked out about the men wearing their "underwears." I keep telling him that they are Speedos. He just can't get over it. He hasn't mentioned the topless women as much.

I couldn't even believe that their was a topless woman smoking outside of the kids club. People just don't care!

Birthdays
Since we brought the kids as their birthday presents, I asked them to decorate the room for them, and they did while we were gone. The kids didn't expect that at all. They made towel art and balloons for them.

Safe
Mom left the safe open while we were gone, so we had a note from Security that we had to go to reception. They had to have management come at 5:00 to re-set it. She said she left it open for me, but it would have been nice if she told me!

R&R
The kids were acting silly, so we wanted them to rest a little before going out again.

Sam got ready first. He didn't want to take another shower, but we told him that he had to. The trouble is that once he goes in, he doesn't want to come out! And, he sings in the shower. he loves dressing up for dinner. He thinks he is so cool!

Shopping
They had people selling their goods at the resort. No one bought anything, but the kids had fun looking.

Italian Buffet
It was busier than usual tonight. Sam ate Lasagna and Risotto with some kind of Seafood. Sydney likes the pizza a lot. Of course, the gelato for dessert is always good. They also had crepes tonight.

Entertainment
The kids show was first and Sam participated. Sydney thought she looked too big compared to the other kids.

At first, they were talking to Sam in Spanish and he looked at them like they were crazy! We had to tell them that he spoke English. Everyone could tell that he's Mexican.

When they played Musical Chairs, I didn't think that Sam knew what to do. He was one of the first ones out. When they asked him his name and where he was from, he didn't know! That happened to Syd the first time we took her to the Bahia Principe.

Crazy Show
Tonight's theme was the "Crazy Show," and it was hillarious. Sam must have the same sense of humor as my dad because he was laughing so hard, he was crying! He thought it was he funniest thing ever.

At the end of the show, Syd and Sam went on stage to dance.

Day 2

RIU Playacar
Regardless of the beach, we felt that the RIU Tequila was nicer, and we switched resorts. Sydney was afraid it wasn't going to be as nice, but she was sooo happy we moved.

We spent the morning at the beach at the RIU Playcar, and the kids collected shells. Then, we went shopping at the market across the street.

RIU Tequila
They couldn't have been more welcoming. We got an excellent location close to the pool and lobby. Everything is very convenient.

Sam liked going to the pool bar, but he hardly ever ordered anything. Every time we looked for Sydney, she was at the pool bar ordering another drink!

The kids had a lot of fun in the pool, but Syd got too much sun regardless of using 50 SPF. We are going to make her wear a t-shirt the rest of the time in the pool. Syd almost participated in Water Polo.

I had a migraine and went to take something for it, and I guess that mom decided to come back to the room, but she didn't remember which room number. The kids tried to tell her, but she didn't believe them. Sam has a good sense of direction. He knows that it's room 3001. He memorized it after that situation!

Dinner
The kids looked very nice tonight. Sam was so funny. He told me that the Mexican shirt I bought him "smelled,' and it did (like stinky feet)! I told him not to wear it, but he still wanted to. Then, he put the collar up (not sure if they do that anymore, but we're in Mexico!). At first Sam tried to get out of taking a shower, but I told him that he had to. So, while I was busy unpacking everyone, and mom was taking a nap, Sam hid under the luggage holder for about 10 minutes.
They had an Asian theme at the buffet tonight. Sam was amazed that our waitress was the same height as him!

Indians
They had some people dressed as Indians for a photo op at the hotel, so we took pictures. Sam now loves Indians! LOL

Playa Del Carmen
After dinner, we headed to town to do some shopping. We needed to buy biodegradeable sunscreen for Xcaret tomorrow. We did some shopping, and Sam got some amazing deals! He said he loves to shop now! He bought a puppet, a skull, a rubber "MEXICO" bracelet, a necklace with an ant inside, and a wooden toy with a bobble head. Sydney bought a t-shirt, got a free beach bag, and she also bought a wooden toy with a bobble head.

Sam was so excited to see a hotel with ivy growing on it. He just loves that look! He pointed that out to me on Mother's Day when we were in Evanston. I think he's going to be a Designer or Architect.

Fire Show
The fire show at Fusion has always been at 10:00 p.m. We got there a little early to get a seat. We ordered drinks and listened to the band and watched a Belly Dancer. We aked twice about the show and we were told it was at 10:00, then 10:30, and finally at midnight! Well, no way were we staying till midnight when it was almost 11:00. Sydney couldn't even hold her head up.

We left and Sam was whistling and yelling "Taxi." He said he likes riding in taxis because it's so easy. I don't think there's anything he doesn't like. The funny thing is that the line of taxi drivers didn't want to take us (probably because it was so close). They sent us down the street where the next guy tried to send us back. I got irritated and walked to 10th Street where I knew they wouldn't have a problem taking us.

When we returned, the lobby was still bustling although the shows were already over. Sydney was going to bed, but Sam was playing with his puppet.

Photos
I took a lot, but forgot my camera in the room. I will try to post tomorrow because we are going to Xcaret. I hope that the kids enjoy it. I don't think that Sydney has done so much in her life.

It Was a Long Day!

Lost Bracelet
I lost my bracelet sometime between Security and waiting to depart. I didn't even realize it until I glanced over and saw it sitting on top of someone else's suitcase. I approached the lady and asked her if she found it, and she said she did, and I told her that it was mine. It was one that I bought during my month long stay in Mexico.

First Class
Mom was in Heaven being in First Class. Sam and Sydney were too. Thanks, John!

Are They Nuts?
I can't believe that American still serves peanuts. What are they thinking? I had to hold my nose for half of the trip. That is so dangerous. What century are we living in?

No Boarding Pass
As we were getting in line to board, Sydney informed me that my mom had her boarding pass and she was already on the plane! I couldn't even believe it! I can't trust those two ever! I asked a lady and she told me to get in this giant line to get a new one, but that didn't even make sense. So, I left the kids with the man who checked people onto the plane while I ran on and got it.

Sydney Aleady Lost Something!
At the Miami airport, Sydney lost her camera case within seconds. She went from one seat to another and couldn't find it. And, it's actually Grandma's camera case!

Transfers
We had private transfers to the RIU Playacar. Sam thought it was awesome. The guy drove very safely. There were a lot of Police on the highway and Sam and Sydney thought they dressed like the military.

RIU Playacar
We grabbed a quick bite to eat before checking out our room 'cuz they closed at 11:30 p.m. Our room smells very musty. When we walked around to show the kids the pools, we discovered that one is closed due to rennovations....not too happy about that (especially since it's the zero depth enrty pool that mom likes). Not sure if we will switch tomorrow. Stay tuned!

The kids are very slap-happy at this point, so we're calling it a night.

Pool Bar

Sam has been so excited to go to the pool bar, and tonight I read on Trip Advisor, that the pool bar was closed during someone's whole stay because they were re-painting it. Luckily, I e-mailed the resort and confirmed that it was painted, but it's finished and up and running again!

Otherwise, I would have had them move us to the RIU Tequila.

Too Much Luggage!

Each of us has a suitcase and carry-on. We are all staying in one room too! I don't know how we are all going to fit.

Mom's suitcase already weighs 46 lbs. and she hasn't put her make-up in it yet. I can't understand how she always does that!

It's going to be very interesting seeing me trying to manage everyone's luggage. Sam has sand some toys that he's going to leave there, but other than that, everything is coming back with us.

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Border Crossing

Tonight Sydney asked how we are going to cross the border into Mexico? LOL We told her that we were flying, but I guess she didn't think about that.

Sunday, May 16, 2010

Mexico Sam

Sam is getting so excited to go to Mexico. He told me that he's "Mexico Sam!" It seems so funny that he's coming up with these ideas on his own.

He also wants to make a scrapbook, so I gave him a bunch of paper and stickers and we got him a disposable camera.

He knows exactly how far away our trip is now because it's exactly when school ends.

I can't even believe that it's almost here!

Wardrobes

Syd's clothes are all ironed and ready to go! I just need a couple more pairs of her flips flops and one more tank top.

I had to buy Sam a pair of closed toed shoes and some extra tank tops, but his clothes are all now ironed as well.

I have all of my clothes picked out, I just need to get them ironed as well.

Mom....well, that's another story! LOL

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Clothing Optional?

We didn't want Sydney and Sam not to have anything to wear, so Syd got a bunch of clothes for her birthday and she bought some more with her birthday money.

I bought Sam some cute water shoes and slip on canvas gym shoes.

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Passports Applied For

Finally, Patty and John applied for Sam's Passport and Sydney's renewal. I was getting worried that they wouldn't be able to go to Mexico. Sam would be very sad. He's been looking forward to this for a long time.

Sunday, February 28, 2010

The Count Down

Aunt Char bought Sydney and Sam each their own calendars to count down the days to our vacation. Sam already hung his on his bedroom wall with a marker next to it so that he can cross off each day.

I think Sydney was more excited that her calendar was a horse calendar than counting down the days.

"I'm Mexican?"

Apparently, Sam didn't realize that he's Mexican. So, when Patty told him, he was so excited. He kept saying, "I Mexican?...I so happy!" LOL

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

RIU Playacar

From May 27-June 1, mom and I are taking Sydney and Sam to Mexico. Sydney can't wait to go horseback riding. Sam said that he's so "sike-id!" I think that's a combination of psyched and excited. After we booked the flights, he asked what time we were leaving "tomorrow." LOL Kids have no concept of time.

Now, we just need Patty to work on getting his Passport. Sydney already has one.
